Southern Soul – Music from Muscle Shoals, Stax and Sun Studios
This theme features the chicken-fried sound of songs made in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and Memphis, Tennessee, both with a rich legacy of soulful music coming out of it’s studios. In Muscle Shoals, the musicians that started the scene there were affectionately called “The Swampers” and they backed many of the artists that recorded at Fame Studios and Muscle Shoals Studios. From the Rolling Stones to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Seger to Aretha Franklin…. Muscle Shoals emanates from the sound of these records. At Stax Studio in Memphis, they too had a house band of musicians known as Booker T. and the M.G.’s. They played on records by the Staple Singers, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Rufus Thomas and of course their breakout star, Otis Redding. Memphis’s Sun Record Company opened in 1950 by it’s founder, Sam Phillips. In 1951 he recorded what is known as the first rock and roll single called “Rocket 88” by Ike Turner. Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich and Jerry Lee Lewis all started their careers at Sun. Lots of songs filled with harmony, horns and soul, rhythm and blues, and powerful vocals will be featured in SOUTHERN SOUL – MUSIC FROM MUSCLE SHOALS, STAX AND SUN STUDIOS.
